The Intro to Fly Fishing class in the spotlight

A short video introduction to the Portland Community College Intro to Fly Fishing course, courtesy student-angler Nathaniel Chapman

Under the lights, things get a little nervous.

Earlier this spring I got a note from Nathaniel Chapman, a PCC student enrolled in the video production program. He had gotten his main classroom assignment: Create a documentary video introducing another course at PCC. So, being an angler, he had chosen mine.

Of course, also being an angler, and being perpetually happy to blather about it, I jumped at the chance to be in the spotlight.

A few weeks later Nathaniel and I had a fun discussion in the PCC media production studio. I gave my little spiel about the program, and our goals for students. And I learned about how he also picked up the sport from his dad.

And a few days after that, Nathaniel and his crew came to a Winter Term class to capture some additional footage.

Here's the result, an overview to what we're trying to do with the Intro to Fly Fishing course at PCC (and all the others yet to come):

Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to cast together, as we were in the grips of some major winter weather that closed the campus three days straight, but Nathaniel was able to get some B-roll footage of his dad casting. Which makes me happy, the honor that brings to their relationship.

My major critique of my performance is I say "hoity-toity" two too many times. But, if you've been in class with me, you know how I feel about the gatekeeping that happens in the sport. And how true-to-life that is, I indeed say "hoity-toity" an average of every two minutes. That and "highfalutin."

So, thanks Nathaniel! And thanks to everyone in Winter Term letting the team film during class. Nathan got to incorporate some images from previous terms, as well—check and see if you're featured!

I also want to give a little shout-out to Nathaniel's collaborators: Lukas Bromander, Jake Benson, and Arowyn Crossley. Thanks for helping make this happen. I hope all your adventures in video take you far.
