Some lines on knots

When it comes to fly-fishing knot tying skill, it's truly a tale of the haves and the have-knots. OK, ok. I promise not to get things too twisted up here, pun-wise at least.

Knots cause beginner anglers stress.

Know how you can tell?

When your newbie friend goes on their first guided trip, and you ask them how it went, they won't rave about the massive fish they caught, or rattle off how much they learned, or how epic the scenery was.

They'll offer this ringing endorsement: "It was great! The guide ties all the knots for you!"

Knots are helpful in fishing, and in life. And learning patience and composure around them is an enduring gift. I'm reminded of this as I draft this note, having just helped a just-as-frustrated-as-you-are seven-year-old navigate an inscrutable Make-It-Cool "Cool Cord" Friendship Bracelet Pack, brought to you by Janlynn Corporation, Division of Spectrum Crafts, Inc. Give me a Bimini Twist over that thing, any day.

For more on knots, including those most practical to us, here's the latest in the Gear Pillar of the Learn To Fly-fish section, The ultimate guide to fly-fishing knots.

You may remember from class how devoted (fanatical?) I am about putting in the practice time. If not, or you need a refresher, check in and pick up a skill-building exercise you can do this winter while you catch up on Slow Horses or Love is Blind.

Spring PCC Intro classes

While you're getting that Blood Knot baked into your brain in front of the tube, let's start dreaming of spring!

Our Intro to Fly Fishing class has been consistently filled, so I'm proposing to the PCC powers that be that we add another section next April, so we'll have some more capacity.

It's a little scary, but I'm hoping some of y'all in this community here in Oregon might be able to let a friend know, and spread the word, when the time comes.

I'm also in the initial planning phases of a Spring get-together, for this group and friends who might want to have some sort of angling-related hoedown.

Hopefully I'll have some dates firmed up on both of these by the new year, and of course you'll hear about them here first.

Video of the week

It's not quite mastering a friendship bracelet weaving kit, but I'm always stoked to watch Eli Iorg and his kids get after fish. If you need a dose of raw enthusiasm, tune in:
